Fascia is a connective tissue organized as a three-dimensional network that surrounds, supports, suspends, protects, connects and divides muscular, skeletal and visceral components of the body. Studies suggest that fascia reorganizes itself along the lines of tension imposed or expressed in the body, and in ways that may cause repercussions to fascial restriction that are body-wide. This review explores some of the features described above, together with evidence supporting the therapeutic efficacy of fascial manipulation, offering a selected overview of the fascial component in osteopathic assessment and treatment.

Lymph stasis can result in edema and the accumulation of particulate matter, exudates, toxins and bacteria in tissue interstitial fluid, leading to inflammation, impaired immune cell trafficking, tissue hypoxia, tissue fibrosis and a variety of diseases. Previously, it was demonstrated that osteopathic lymphatic pump techniques significantly increased thoracic and intestinal duct lymph flow. The purpose of this study was to determine if LPT would mobilize inflammatory mediators into the lymphatic circulation.

Spinal manipulative therapy has been reported to successfully treat hypertension. The purpose of this study was to perform a qualitative literature review on the efficacy of SMT for treating HTN.

Journal of Manual & Manipulative Therapy

Acute low back pain may limit mobility and impose functional limitations in active duty military personnel. Although some manual therapies have been reported effective for ALBP in military personnel, there have been no published randomized controlled trials of osteopathic manipulative treatment in the military. Furthermore, current military ALBP guidelines do not specifically include OMT.
