The OsEAN Open Forum 2024, held on November 7-8 at the Italian Academy of Osteopathic Medicine (AIMO) in Saronno, Italy, brought together osteopathic educators, professionals, and students for two days of engaging discussions, networking, and learning.

Under the theme Osteopathic Models – Between Tradition and Evidence-Based Practice the forum addressed the challenges and opportunities facing the osteopathic profession during a time of transition. With some schools adhering to traditional models and others integrating contemporary research, the event provided a platform to explore new frameworks while respecting osteopathy’s roots.

Eight OsEAN Open Forum for Osteopathic Education Conference "Teaching Clinical Competencies" - September 2022 (Antwerp, Belgium)

The topic of OsEAN’s 8th "Open Forum for Osteopathic Education" conference was "Teaching Clinical Competencies". The clinic is an important part in osteopathic education and clinical competencies are a core part of osteopathic training, according to the CEN-Standard for Osteopathy (CENTC414-N0086). Teaching clinical competencies includes the application of all osteopathic skills to real patients.

The programme included two keynote speeches by Prof. Eyal Lederman (UK) and Steven Vogel (UK), eleven presentations and six workshops in the folloing areas:

The topic of the seventh “Open Forum for Osteopathic Education” conference which was held on 23rd & 24th September 2021 ONLINE was “Teaching the Working Principles of Osteopathy” (Historical, physiological, mechanical, philosophical, scientific ways of view). It featured presentations and workshops in this important area.

The workings principles of Osteopathy are a central part of our osteopathic education, but even now many schools are struggling to get a grip on the ‘how, why & what’ questions in explaining osteopathy. This is why, the 7th OsEAN Open Forum focused on that topic.

The sixth “Open Forum for Osteopathic Education” Conference took place on 18th & 19th October 2018 in Lyon, France. Following the focus on Teaching and Osteopathic Education in previous Open Forums this year’s topic was “Teaching Osteopathic Diagnostics”. There were 100 participants from 16 countries. Represented were osteopathic schools from whole Europe, Australia, Canada, USA and Malaysia.

Teaching clinical reasoning, reliability, osteopathic approach etc. can be difficult and each school has a different diagnostic model in place. This is why sharing, discussion and exchange of knowledge and experience about this topic was and is very important.

OsEAN Open Forum Vienna 2016

The fifth edition of OsEAN "Open Forum for Osteopathic Education" Conference with the topic "Teaching the Soft Skills" took place on April 21st and 22nd 2016, in Vienna, Austria.
There were 65 participants from 17 countries. Represented were osteopathic schools not only from whole Europe but also from Argentina, Australia, Canada and USA.

The fourth OsEAN "Open Forum for Osteopathic Education" Conference with the topic "Innovation in Osteopathic Education" took place on 31st May and 1st June 2014 in Barcelona, Spain.
Presentations and workshops of the open forum concentrated on new ways of teaching, learning and assessing. Such as e-learning and beyond: The use of technology and teaching aids in osteopathic education, the growing influence of educational science and interdisciplinary approaches.

The third Open Forum "Teaching Research"

On 20th and 21st September 2012 OsEAN held its third edition of "Open Forum for Osteopathic Education" conference in Sevres, near Paris/France. The topic was "Teaching Research", offering an opportunity for presentations and workshops on how we teach and assess research in our schools.

The second Open Forum "Teaching Palpation"

In 2011 on September 29th and 30th OsEAN held its second “Open Forum for Osteopathic Education” conference in Potsdam, near Berlin/Germany, as part of the annual general meeting of the Osteopathic International Alliance (OIA). This time the topic was “Teaching palpation” with presentations and workshops revolving around this osteopathic core-competence.

On November 28th and 29th 2009 OsEAN held its first “Open Forum for Osteopathic Education” conference in Vienna/Austria. The topic was “Cooperation in Osteopathic Education” among the topic areas were teacher training, research cooperation, students exchange programs and administrative cooperation.

During the past decade Osteopathy in Europe has been expanding at an enormous speed. There is a strong trend towards university validated courses, requiring a constant improvement of the quality of Osteopathic Education. Most schools are striving for growth and improvement on their own and with limited resources whereas cooperation and exchange can help us to learn from each other and take the profession to a new, academic level together.
