Major limb amputation, traumatically or nontraumatically induced, is a major life-changing event, often precipitating chronic pain, dysfunction, and altered self-image. This article explores the relevance of osteopathic manipulative treatment in management of the patient with major limb amputation, using the lower limb as an example and focusing primarily on issues related to gait and psychological independence.

Recently a clinical prediction rule for lumbar regional spinal thrust manipulation has shown predictive success in patients with back pain who met specific selection criteria. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of STM and mechanical diagnosis and therapy in patients who are positive for the STM CPR.

Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology

While spinal manipulation is widely seen as a reasonable treatment option for biomechanical disorders of the spine, such as neck pain and low back pain, the use of spinal manipulation to treat non-musculoskeletal complaints remains controversial. This controversy is due in part to the perception that there is no robust neurobiological rationale to justify using a biomechanical treatment of the spine to address a disorder of visceral function. This paper therefore looks at the physiological evidence that spinal manipulation can impact visceral function.

Chiropractic & Manual Therapies

Studies of back pain are typically based on the assumption that symptoms from different parts of the spine are distinctive entities. Recently, however, the assumption that back pain is a site-specific disorder has been challenged, suggesting that localized back pain should be seen as part of a general musculoskeletal syndrome.
