The names of certain counter strain tender points are incongruent with their physical locations because of an assumption that these points are reflective of dysfunction in neighboring body areas. Because the body area that is physically examined does not always match the body region in which somatic dysfunction is diagnosed for these tender points, it is not always clear which evaluation and management service codes should be used for billing physician services.

Manipulation of the cervical spine should not be abandoned. Recently, an international multidisciplinary task force endorsed manipulation as one of several firstline treatments for neck pain, whiplash and related headaches based on a systematic review of randomized clinical trials of interventions and research on adverse events. They also published an original decision analysis model examining drugs, exercise, mobilization and manipulation for neck pain, including summary estimates on benefits and harms, and incorporating patient preferences using the standard gamble method. Overall, there was no clear winner when the objective was to maximize quality adjusted life.

Osteopathic Family Physician

Several studies have assessed interexaminer correlation of diagnosis of somatic dysfunction (SD). This study looks at the simple task of palpating the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) of both a live and a fixed plastic model to determine whether examination results are reliable .

Pregnant women experience extensive physiologic and structural changes during pregnancy. The author reviews the literature on how osteopathic manipulative treatment can improve structure and quality of life in pregnant women, particularly as they relate to labor, cardiovascular health and back pain.

Chiropractic & Manual Therapies

Pregnancy-related low back pain is pain of insidious onset in the lumbar or sacroiliac region that begins during pregnancy. Over half of all pregnant women experience PRLBP and the natural trajectory of the condition is intensification of pain over the course of pregnancy. This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the feasibility of conducting a full scale study and compared the efficacy of exercise, spinal manipulation, and a mind-body therapy called Neuro Emotional Technique for the treatment of pregnancy-related low back pain, a common morbidity of pregnancy.
